Key safes offer a very convenient way to store keys outside your property or building, providing easy and secure access. They eliminate the hassle of distributing keys individually, ensuring safety and simplicity.

To maximise their effectiveness, it is essential to choose a high-quality, durable safe, especially since they are exposed to the elements, like rain and frost. Look for safes that are ‘Police Approved’ for extra peace of mind, and remember, most safes have multiple combination options, making codes harder for intruders to guess.

Key safe placement is critical

Where you install your key safe is just as important as the type you select. For example, if it’s for an elderly loved one with regular carers, avoid placing it where passersby can see it from the road… discretion is crucial.

If concealment isn’t possible, opt for a sturdy, weather-resistant model that can withstand outdoor conditions.

Selecting the right code

Choosing a secure combination is similar to creating a strong password. Avoid obvious options, such as birth years. Codes are often ‘non-sequential’. This means the order in which you input the code doesn’t matter; for instance, 1234 can be entered as 2341 or 4321. Some models do not allow duplicate numbers; an example of this is 1066, but 1065 is perfect. You will also find letters such as an ‘a’ or ‘b’ can be included in the code.

Size matters

Think about how many keys you need to store. If you have multiple keys, select a larger safe that can comfortably fit everything without compromising security.

By paying attention to these factors, you can ensure your key safe provides peace of mind, convenience, and security, whatever the circumstances.

Securing the key safe

This is especially important. The safe needs to be secured into bricks, not just the mortar. We have the tools to assist with this. Your DIY drill will not suffice! The last thing you want is for the key safe to be pulled off the wall by a passing opportunist.

If you need or are considering a key safe, get in touch. We have various options available. Although these are often not needed in an emergency, as locksmiths, we can fit one within 24 hours of your call.
